What's Up in Science Enrichment with Mr. D....

Kindergarten students are exploring with their senses.  

(Mr. D is in need of blindfolds for this activity.)

First Grade students are working with magnets and discovering  the magnetic field using compasses.

Second Grade students are studying the concepts of vibration and pitch.  They are experimenting how to make different sounds.

Third Grade students are building bridges and talking about gravity, friction, force, motion, and energy.

Fourth Grade students are comparing magnetism to static electricity.  This will lead into making electrical circuits.

Fifth Grade students are building solar cookers and studying the concepts of covection, radiation, and conduction.

Allison Mathews, Janene Dolge, Jessica Joyce and Libby Miller for signing up to assist Mrs. Hartman decorate for the "Buzzy Bee" Volunteer Breakfast.  Thanks to every grade level that has signed up to date and the specialists that have joined in.  We still need the fruit tray to be taken and for the specialists/EC/PRT TA's to sign-up to assist with this event.

Focus Thought of the Week:

Have you ever thought about how students feel who just do not get it in school or don't look like or talk like the others in their classes.  As a former special education teacher, I have thought about it a lot.  A few weeks ago, I was at home with Ellie one Sunday morning.  She had a fever and I didn't want her to miss school on Monday so we stayed home and took some ibuprofen make everything better.  We curled up on the couch and decided to watch TV. As she was flipping stations,  I caught a portion of Joel Osteen  preaching his weekly sermon.  He said something that really caught my attention.  I made Ellie stop and we watched the sermon~ for a bit. This focus is based on what I heard that morning.  It is not meant to be a sermon for you  but for me to share how his words inspired me.    I missed the beginning  of the sermon but the gist goes like this....

Have you ever purchased a dented food can at the grocery store?  You know ~the section of damaged goods that have been taken off the shelf and discounted greatly.  The damaged can did not change the quality of the food inside... it just made the can look less attractive to the customer.  The food was still preserved and most likely  tasted the same.  As the customer you believed when you purchased the food it would taste just fine.  You get the point.... the outside looks different but the inside is the same as the food without the dent.

I thought to myself this analogy applies school students in so many ways.  Students here and across the country come to us in all shapes and sizes.  Students come dressed in the most popular trendy clothes to clothes that are dirty, ragged and clearly second hand.  Students come to school ready to read and others have yet learned how to correctly hold the book.  For some the learning comes easy and other it seems like we have to share the same information over and over and over.  Some come from families with mom, dad and 2.5 kids and others have two moms, two dads, eight grandparents and 6.5 step siblings.  Sometimes the students mentioned in the later of each if these examples are the ones who often feel like dented goods.  I BELIEVE it is our responsibility to make all student feel like they are shelf worthy!  As I visit classrooms here at Lewisville, I know that you are making sure all students are being successful despite obstacles that they may face when they leave us each day.  You, as a whole staff,  you find the good in every child.  You know instinctively that students are coming to school and want to learn and want to please you.  Sometimes they just may be a little dented on the outside but the inside is wanting, needing, and yearning to be like everyone else.  

As your principal and as a parent I thank you for looking past the "dents" and appreciating the good that is in every child that we serve.

What's Going on in Science Enrichment?

Kindergarten:  The students are learning how to make a magnet.  Simple Machines will be introduced.

First Grade:  The students are learning about how rockets move in space.

Second Grade:  The students are growing crystals.

Third Grade:  The students are learning the causes of natural disasters such as earthquakes.

Fourth Grade:  The students are identifying rocks and performing various tests on them. (e.g., vinegar test and streak test)

Fifth Grade:  Mr. D. will be demonstrating "escape velocity" in an experiment.

• EOQ Testing: NO RECESS UNTIL ANNOUNCED VIA INTERCOM.   SPECIAL CLASSES WILL OPERATE ON REGULAR SCHEDULE.
