Good News Story

I would like to take a moment to share a story good news story that is personal to me.  You may have read the news story about the Yadkin County native that has been named the interim US Senator for Massachusetts.  His name is Maurice Cowan and I went to shool with him for 11 years.  First, I am very proud to know him. Second, his story is inspirational.  Maurice is a young African-American man that came from a loving family that wasn't upper middle class.  He tells that his mother worked as a semstress to help support his family.  What I remember is a school mate that was always smart, funny and kind.  Thinking back I never thought about his race or socioeconomic status I just knew he was a nice kid.  In high school I probably didn't talk to him much as you make your own friends and go your own way.  He was the first student from Forbush High School to go to Duke University. This was a big deal in 1987.  As the years passed, I remember asking folks what happened to Maurcie and most often we would hear he is lawyer up north.  I was so happy and surprised to hear his news this week.  A US Sentator from my hometown - WOW!  Then I started looking at this monumental event through the eyes of an educator and I did another WOW.  I thought to myself I wonder if Mrs. Gaglardi knows about this as she was my favorite teacher and appartently was his too.  He mentioned her in an article stating shared that to this day she "keeps up" with him.  He considers her a friend as I do and all the other students she taught.  I do not remember what she taught me but I do remember she cared about me.  She greeted us each day with a smile on her face.  I don't know if she had a bad day because she didn't tell us.  In my child's mind she was perfect.  She smiled and laughed with us.  She asked us about our lives. I want you to know...  TEACHERS DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!  Maurice credited his public school education as the stepping stone to his career.  He shared that his teachers had encouraged and supported him.  You may wonder why I am telling you all this... the point is YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE.  You may not see it today but you are touching someones life profoundly.  We know you spend long hours at home on the weekends in preparation for the week- but it is worth it.  I wonder who your Maurice will be?

THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO AND HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK!
