What is going on in Science Enrichment with Mr. D?

News about the Upcoming Science Fair.....

This week, I hope that the K-3 Teachers are working on your students' science experiment by writing down the procedure and finishing the abstract of the experiment telling what the children learned about the topic.  This should be a class writing activity.

By November 26th:  Your students should be finished writing their results and conclusion.  Also, have them write "future directions" as to what they want to study next.  It may be an extension of their science project.

Please keep in mind, first and second grade teachers, that the writing can be the informative/explanatory piece of writing for their K-5 literacy portfolio for second quarter.

December 10th is our Science Fair.  Please be prepared to hand in your class project between 12:00-2:00 on December 9th.  That way I will have more time to set up for our judges who are coming on December 10th.

Please note:  Any child who hands in an individual project will need to "register" their project with me in the gym between 7:30-9:00 on December 10th.

There will be a chance for your students to view the projects on December 11th.  I will put out a sign-up sheet in the work room for this event.

If you need a science fair board for your class project, please see me.   Thank you for all your support and instruction!  We couldn't have this event without your expertise!

DIBELS Next and TRC news....

According to Janie Costello, if a child is red or yellow on a measure in DIBELS Next and red or yellow on TRC, progress monitor the student both on DIBELS Next and TRC.   This means that some students will be progress monitored on a DIBELS measure and TRC on red and/or yellow weeks on your calendar.  If you haven't progress monitored the child on TRC (because you were waiting for this answer) please progress monitor those students who are in red or yellow on TRC no later than November 26th.

During the "green week", you will progress monitor the children who are in green on the probe that the device prompts you to use in DIBELS Next.  The device will prompt you as to which probe you PM.  You will only do one probe.  For TRC, you may use the grade level default or if necessary move up a level when progress monitoring a student.

As always, please ask questions if you are unclear about anything.

I have found some helpful websites you may want to use as you write your unit plans....

www.learnzillion.org

http://www.infoplease.com

http://www.readtennessee.org  (Its not just reading, go to their math toolbox...it is AMAZING)

http://www.secretary.state.nc.us  (This website is great for 4th grade NC History)

channelone.com  (go to daily show)  I would use this website with fourth and fifth grade students.  Each daily show touches on science and social studies content.

Rigor in Reading Instruction....

I recently read an article entitled, "Unlocking the Secrets of Complex Text".  What is complex text?

This article suggests that complex text:

*conveys multiple ideas/multiple perspectives,
*moves from narrative to expository text,
*changes in tone throughout the text,
*supports points with details in different places in the text.

Ask children ...

1.  What does this text teach?
Now, based on a child's answer to question #1, ask
"What in the text makes you say that?" and
"What details in the text support those ideas?"

Model answering the question above in a minilesson in which you do shared reading and actually "flip" through the book under a document camera looking for things that the text teaches you.  Don't just look at the content, look also at the illustrations, charts, lists, etc.  Invite students to give it a try in their small group and in a literacy centers after repeated modeling on the teacher's part.

Hopefully, this strategy will help our younger students get used to "finding information in the book" to support their answers.

Also, according to research, one more structure that will "aid transference of a skill or strategy is having the opportunity to practice it over and over.    Hattie (2011) found that feedback in the midst of work, followed by a chance to put that feedback into action or play, dramatically improves student achievement.

So as you are planning with your team, ask yourselves....where in the curriculum will my students get another chance to keep on working with this skill/strategy.

More to come......

What's Happening in Science Enrichment this Week?

Kindergarten:  Last week, the children found pods outside and took the seeds out of them.  This week, Mr. D will be telling the Apple Star Story.  The children are going to act out the story line.

First Grade:  Mr. Dougherty is trying to teach the first graders to "appreciate" nature.  First, he will be talking about his rules that the children should follow when they are outside.  The children are going to find their special place and imagine what it would be like if the trees, flowers, etc. could talk.

Second Grade:  The children are finishing their very own books about what they learned about birds.  They will be sharing these books with each other.

Third Grade:  The students planted trees last week.  They will be talking about different kinds of seeds.

Fourth Grade:  The students are finishing their presentations of their "Nature Squares".  They will be sharing with each other.

Fifth Grade:  The students are going to watch Mr. D perform a science experiment this week.  The students will also be preparing to build catapults with Mr. D.

Progress Monitoring DIBELS Next and TRC begins this week......

I will come around to your rooms on Monday to see when you would like me to help you  progress monitor your students.  Remember, we are only progress monitoring the children who are in yellow.  I will also give a "kit" of books to the grade level chairperson that you will most likely need to progress monitor TRC.  If you need another level that isn't in the kit, let me know.  I will get it from another grade level.  When you are progress monitoring TRC, you will have the opportunity to choose the page(s) for the student to read aloud to you.  Then before answering questions, allow the child to finish reading the book.  The machine will not prompt you to the next level.

I will also be putting the Home Connect letters in your boxes this week to send home with report cards.

K-2 Testing....  If you need any help with your math assessments, please let me know.  I can teach a lesson while you assess or I can assess.

Questions and Answers.....

1.  What if a student is yellow in CLS and red in WWR?  Do I test every 10 days or 20 days?  I would test every 10 days hoping that the child will achieve his or her goal of earning 3 scores over the aim line faster.

2.  What if a student is green in CLS and red in WWR?  How often do I test?  Again, I would test every 10 days hoping that the child will achieve his or her goal of earning 3 scores over the aim line faster.

3. How do you get the out of grade level box to come up?  If you click on an assessment such as TRC and it is "below grade level" for the child you are testing, the machine will prompt you to choose an out of grade level text.

Have a good week!!!!!

MINI FRIDAY FOCUS

Every Thursday evening I, along with many other LES parents,  hang out at Salem Gymnastics for hours on end.  Last night, while waiting for my little one to finish her class a lady approached me and said, "Are you Mrs. Choplin?  I thought I recognized your voice.  You do call my house every week!"  Naturally, I responded, Yes."  Now, at this point, I was about 110% sure this would end up being a conversation about school.  My assumption was correct-- the conversation about school.  I would like to share it with you.

The mom (to remain anonymous) said, "I just wanted to tell you that my daughter is in class with  Mrs. Letourneau and Mrs. Norman and she is having the best year!  We couldn't have asked for a better situation for her kindergarten year. She is learning Spanish and understands more that I do.  They are just fantastic and my daughter loves school!"  We went on to discuss her daughter and how well she was doing in school.  Then mom said, "I also want to tell you I loved the Kinder Camp.  I think you are the only school that does that around here.  I told my friend and she said that her school did not have a kinder camp and that she wished her child could have gone to kindercamp. Kinder Camp was fantastic! I just wanted to make sure I told you how much we like Lewisville School."  We talked for few more minutes and went our separate ways.

I must have been smiling from ear to ear after she left.  My heart was full of pride.  I wanted to share this for a couple of reasons....
  • Each of you are making a difference.  You may not hear the good on a daily basis but you are touching lives.
  • I think we should lift each other up with the positives we hear. I hope that if you hear a good news story you will share it.
  • I may not tell you enough but you are a fantastic, hard-working, dedicated staff and I am proud to be your principal- your colleague.
Thanks for you do and have a wonderful weekend.
